Hi,

OK - bought me a Thump this week & the rear shock is pants.

I've stripped the bike down & want to rebuild the shock in the hope of getting a bit of damping in there!

So - how is it done? I've bought some 15 weight shock oil & know my way round a bag of spanners, I guess I need to know (i) where do you seperate the shock to empty / pour the oil 7 how much oil (ii) do you need to bleed it? (iii) do you need to pump air into that valve?

Cheers in advance!

Matthew :)

But assuming I would like to try & rebuild the thump one first? (Just think of it as a fun exercise!)

Have you not read the thumpstar prepping thread?
Try that 1st

I read the prepping thread - first thing I did even before buying the thumpster.

I just don't quite get it (like I said).

Full of tiger p&ss - how do I get it out?
Refill with shock oil - where exactly & how much?
Immerse in pop bottle - immerse in what (I'm guessing shock oil??)?
Pump till no air comes out - what? By moving the arm up & down?

The way I figure, doing that will entirely fill the chamber of the shock with oil, so what is the air valve for?

Do me a favour Pete & spell it out for me & anyone else who hasn't done any of this stuff before.

Thanks again,

Matthew

Remove the valve with 10mm spanner, hold the shock upside down and pump it.

In prepping thread.

Yes

Yes we are getting somewhere
so what is the air valve for?
To put air in (gas if you have nitrogen handy)

Do me a favour Pete & spell it out for me & anyone else who hasn't done any of this stuff before.
Thought I did in the prepping thread :(

Thanks again,

Matthew

Thanks Pete! I kinda get it now - much appreaciation for your patience!

I'm still confused (stupid!) about the air valve though. If you completely fill the shock chamber with oil, where is any air going to go when you "pump it with 80-100lbs"? Surely there must be a bit of a gap for the air to go in so as to pressurise the shock?

Thanks again Pete - have I just misunderstood what the point of the air valve is for?

Matthew :D

No, when its full of fluid, the can still go in under pressure (it compresses). But you only get a tiny bit in. Doesnt take long to get 80psi in.
