    125cc Recommendations...

Just toying with the idea of doing a CBT and possibly getting a 125cc bike as a cheap mode of transport for getting to and from work. Been looking around and might consider something like this:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/APRILIA-RS125-...1%7C240%3A1318

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/APRILIA-RS-125...1%7C240%3A1318

Any views or recommendations on a decent 125.

    Cheers.

those sort of things never turn out to be very cheap in the long run and far too much temptation to get into trouble.
this is what you want for really cheap to run and fairly nippy transport i love mine

The Aprilia RS 125 is a good bike. Plenty around, cheap parts and easy to work on. Insurance can be a bit steep compared to other machines as it is THE most stolen 125 in the UK apparently. Not my opinion, but a fact from the Motor Insurers Bureau.

I had one of the originals back in the early '90's with a Rotax 123 engine and loved it.

The Rotax 122 which is the later models (like the '02) is just as good. Watch out for the swing arm bushes and spacers on anything with that sort of mileage as they are a fairly big job to do so alot of people ignore why they are going through so many chains and sprockets!!

Check the chain tension with the bike on it's stand then with someone sitting on the bike. It will go from quite being quite slack to a banjo string because the bushes will be oval rather than round. You should be able to see witness marks where the swing arm is moving backwards and forwards at it's pivot point.

The first one sounds like it may have a sticking powervalve which is a doddle to put right.

I recently took the new Yamaha 125 out for a quick test ride. Thats a 4 stroke so no 2 stroke issues...but it couldn't put a smile on my face like the Aprilia.... it felt flat and gutless.

Failing that a decent sccot like the one above will see you right

    Thats just my opinion

theres loads of 125's, cagiva mito's, cagiva planet, aprilia rs125, CBR 125, New Yamaha R125, tz125's, derbi GPR 125, entierly depends on if you want 2t or 4t, 2t will be more fun, more power but more expensive, 4t more reliable, will get you from A to B but there no where near as fast.

it really is up to you

outa the lot the best reliability good for 80 90ish with new gearing parts are easy to find

aprillia rs 125 most are owned by spoilt brats that dont look after them yes there fast but they break down loads and are a pain to run and more than likely put you off biking learn the ropes with the cbr125 then move onto a 600 when you can

You can't go wrong with a Honda, I know parts can be a problem to get, I know of three people who had Aprillia's, 1 had a 1 year old 125, ended up being off the road for 11 months waiting for warranty parts from Aprillia, 1 had a RSVR Millie SP, had a couple of parts stolen, needed them the dealer laughed and said you'll be lucky! and evena blank key took 6 weeks, last was a RSVR 1000 and side stand kept bending, quoted 6 weeks from Aprillia and cost a fortune, he brought one from a breakers yard of a Firestorm and cut and welded it in the right position.

Maybe bad luck but the bloke who services mine said he can never get parts when they go wrong, and it will go wrong.

I will admit parts take an age to come through the aprilia dealer network, but I must be one of the few thats never had an rs125 break down on me!!

As much as many'll hate me for sayin' this, but if you want it for commuting to and from work, ignore the existence of 2T-125s. Stick with 4T reliability / low service intervals... CBR125 all the way... parts now easy to get hold of - we've blown enough of em up in the sidecar to know that...

Chhers for the replies. Will be lookin at 4T-125's, as stated for reliability. Probably looking at the CBR 125 or maybe the Yamaha YBR 125, although this bike gives away a few HP to the Honda. So at the moment the Honda is looking favorite.
