A decent minimoto goes from £200 upwards, bear in mind chances are regardless what you pay you'll need to budget for new tyres, clutch shoes and other consumables that will probably want replacing (dunno what it is, people just don't seem to look after 'em like they used to..)
A realistic budget to buy, debodge and setup to a good standard would probably be £400-450ish for a good 4.2
You can race as soon as you have a bike, or if you can't wait hirebikes are sometimes available.
A full race weekend costs £85, the organisers are insured so you don't need to be. Matchams probably isn't far from you the lcrrc organise a series there.. go along and have a look. Ask for Jimbo and he'll see you right. nicest bloke in the world.

    Hi Dan

    Welcome to the forum

Do you want to race each other on track days or race in a series against other racers on equal bikes?

To race against each other on track days then £150 - £200 each for a bike (polini/pasini or a blata) would get you a more than good enough bike each and enough spares to have some good fun. Track days range from anywhere between £15 and £25 each for a session.

If you want to race in a more serious way and go to organised meets then it would depend on you weight and budget. I'm sure someone else will be along soon to give you more info on this.

Whatever you decide try and steer clear of the cheap chinese stuff as they are slow and never run for very long.

It's not the cheapest of hobbies but if you think how much you would pay for 30 mins worth of karting and think after you have bought your bikes you get to race each other and anyone else on the track all day for that £25!

Perhaps a day out to somewhere that does hire bikes for you and your dad would be a good idea. A chance to chat with some people who have bikes have a ride yourself.

A friend and I both bought baby blatas at £90 each and raced each other on tracks all over the country it was until we learnt how to get every last bit out of them on the track that we bought more expensive bikes.

Tyres and clutches last for ever on the less powerful bike I think the only thing i replaced was footpegs from falling off. £5 worth of fuels last all day on the track so once you have bought your bikes paying £25 for a track day is a cheap days entertainment!

Everything is expensive if you're skint... but compared to things that offer a simlar rush (karting being the prime example) then owning and running a mm for track days can be cheap. racing is more expensive but everyone who races loves it and thinks it is well worth the money.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking you need a mega fast bike straight off, you will most likely end up slower in the long run than having a slow bike but learning to ride the absolute nuts off it. When you're dicing with the people on the faster bikes, that's a good time to get a faster bike

When you put it like that... But if i had £25 every few weeks thats what i would love to spend it on... but i dont! When you pay £25 can you go out onto the track anytime you like?

It depends on the track, sometimes they split it for age/ability, sometimes you're sharing with karts, other times it's a free for all all day. typically though you're looking at 20 quid for 4 hours, thats a fiver an hour which is cheap for how much fun it is.

if its too much for the lad its too much. simple. i dont race for the same reason just go on track days, also you carnt just go racing strait the way, you can start as you mean to go on then at your own pace, farther and son could share a bike at least to begin with (all tho its always nice to go round together) to dramatically cut down costs and also on track dasys most places let and extra rider share a bike for either free (if its price per bike) for just an extra £5. thats got to be loads cheaper. so 200 for good aircooled then your procetive gear then £30 for both of you to race round all day sweet
